La «verbal music» di James Joyce in traduzione

Abstract

Nei Translation Studies, si è più volte discusso della necessità di tradurre lo stile dei testi letterari assieme al loro contenuto, in particolare quando questo è ritenuto «dominante» del testo fonte. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man e ‘Sirens’, lo stile Joyciano – tanto musicale da essere stato definito «verbal music» – è spesso una delle «dominanti». In questo articolo intendo approfondire come si possano mantenere alcuni aspetti della «verbal music» Joyciana in traduzione prendendo in considerazione i principi della «Science of Rhythm» – una disciplina che ha influenzato lo stile di diversi scrittori modernisti. Nell’articolo, in primis, è esposta la teoria ritmica di Sidney Lanier. Secondariamente, si prendono in considerazione alcuni passi da A Portrait e ‘Sirens’ per identificarne gli elementi musicali «dominanti». Infine, considerando alcune traduzioni italiane di A Portrait e Ulysses, si mostra come un’analisi dei pattern sonori del testo fonte permetta di migliorare la musicalità del testo di arrivo.

In Translation Studies, scholars have frequently discussed the need to translate the style of literary texts together with their content, especially when the former is «dominant» in the ST. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and ‘Sirens’, Joyce’s style, sometimes characterized by what scholars define as «verbal music», is often one of the «dominants». My aim here is to consider how to translate some aspects of this«verbal music» through the principles of the «Science of Rhythm» – a discipline which influenced the style of many Modernists. In the article, firstly, I report S. Lanier’s rhythmic theory. Secondly, I focus on some passages from A Portrait and ‘Sirens’, in order to identify the «dominant» musical elements. Finally, considering some published Italian translations of the texts, I show how the musicality of the TT could be improved through an analysis of the rhymical patterns of the ST.
